LUUMC's The Journal Magazine
brief
As a member of Leeds University Union Mountaineering Club and a graphic and communication design student, I volunteered to support with the design of The Journal Volume III, a climbing magazine run by the society dating back to the 1960s. I was responsible for the design of the front and back cover, a redesign of a map of Yorkshire climbing destinations, two new editorial spread designs and promotional stickers to be sold alongside the publication.
Solution
The most challenging aspect of this project was the redesign of the Yorkshire climbing destinations map from a previous edition of The Journal, redrawing the map from scratch to allow for easier information processing and to remain in-keeping with the rest of the magazine. I used one landscape image for the design of the front and back cover, allowing for a continuous design when the magazine is spread open, and used the same typography for promotional sticker designs to encourage recognition amongst climbers, alongside bespoke climbing-related illustrations. A grid layout system and typographic guidelines were developed by the lead designer, which I adhered to for my editorial spread designs to ensure consistency.
